Mission Impossible Final Reckoning Review
“Ethan Hunt’s” Most Impossible Task Yet
The main plot of the film is about Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) seeking to defeat the Entity which is an errant artificial intelligence that threatens humanity’s existence. From the infiltration of a submarine that is leaking Sevastopol submarine to an ephemeral race against time, the plot keeps the suspense and high stakes that we’ve become accustomed to from the series.
While certain elements of the story feel like a bit formulaic however, the expert direction of Christopher McQuarrie ensures the pacing is enthralling. For fans who have been around for years, there are flashbacks to unforgettable moments from previous films that create a full-circle plot that pays tribute to the legacy of the franchise.
A Behind-the-Scenes Look
With a staggering cost of $400,000, The Final Reckoning does not cut corners. The commitment to authenticity is apparent, as most of the movie was shot on location with scenic backdrops throughout Norway which add the feeling of size to the IMF’s global mission.
But, the production didn’t follow the same course. The filming process was delayed due to the strike in 2023 by SAG-AFTRA and principal photography was wrapped up in the latter half of 2024. In spite of these delays however, the final product is a stunning visual film that takes you into the world of adventure and Ethan Hunt.
Critics and supporters agree
After its release, The Final Reckoning premiered to great applause. It is a hefty Rotten Tomatoes score and continues to receive praise for its breathtaking action scenes. However, critics have pointed out that the melodramatic aspects of the plot and its overly serious tone could sometimes make it difficult to watch. But the film shows the reasons Mission Impossible remains one of the most beloved action series in Hollywood.
Stunts and Action
If there’s a thing that the film does well is action. The film’s most memorable scenes include:
- The Sevastopol Submarine Ethan’s risky intrusion to recover the Entity’s source code is thrilling, tense and beautifully choreographed.
- Submarine Drama The shocking sequence that will see Ethan take on an underwater adventure with a limited supply of oxygen which makes for an extremely nerve-wracking scenes of the series.
- The Biplane Stunt It’s a possible best part of the film the sequence demonstrates Tom Cruise’s legendary dedication to a practical approach to effects. Being able to watch Ethan Hunt pilot a vintage biplane, while avoiding enemies’ fires taps into the intense adrenaline that characterizes Mission Impossible.
Every single stunt demonstrates the necessity of teamwork within the IMF especially in the final scenes where the trust of characters is tested unlike ever before.
Emotional Deepness
While action is the main focus, The Final Reckoning also spends time looking into Ethan Hunt’s background and motives. Ethan’s reflections on his 35 year time with the IMF add a personal touch to the story. For those who have been following this series from the early ’90s the insight of Ethan is like a bittersweet way to say goodbye.
The bonds between the characters are also evident and are particularly evident in the scenes involving Grace (Hayley Atwell), Luther (Ving Rhames) along with Benji (Simon Pegg). Their camaraderie is a reminder of the reason Mission Impossible is not just about fast-paced chase scenes, but about human connections.
Strengths and weaknesses
There is no perfect film The same goes for movies, and Final Reckoning is no exception. Final Reckoning has some flaws. The predictable script and melodramatic plot twists might not be appealing to every person. But, they aren’t major issues when compared to the amazing technical execution, intense performances and thrilling action.
